The Lake Waccabuc Association
The Lake Waccabuc Association (LWA) was established to promote the community interest and general health and welfare of owners and residents along the northeast shore of Lake Waccabuc, and to that end:
To foster improvements to the six right-of-ways owned by the association.
To conserve the wildlife and natural beauty of the lake.
To establish recreational activities for children and adults.
To promote ordinances for the lake and adjacent land that protect the welfare of LWA owners and residents.
To support the efforts of the Three Lakes Council in testing the water, replenishing and restocking the lake.
To promote social activities among it's members.
2026 Message from the President
Dear LWA members, neighbors and friends:
Spring has sprung. The robins are back and the forsythia are in bloom. Kids are playing on our streets and dog walkers and pedestrians are out marveling at our gardens. Boats are back on the lake and if it gets warmer, we’ll be swimming soon enough. A few thoughts follow.
Your lake association is a community-minded organization of volunteers. The board you voted in meets a handful of times a year; the committees - beautification, ROWs/docks, membership, directory, recreation/events/social calendar, website – do work throughout the year. You can help, pitch in, participate. If you store a canoe or kayak on ROW 1, consider joining the annual cleanup. Plan to help pulling weeds from the ROWs. When we schedule BBQs or fire and ice, help set up and tidy up afterwards. Think about running for an elected position with the LWA: we turn over three board seats every year and the presidency every two years. We all would welcome your greater involvement.
I have some concerns about safety on the water. Please discuss the following with your kids if they are of age. We have some new residents and a growing number of short term rentals whose renters would not know about the rules on the water. Such as:
25 hp motor limit;
the NY state requirement that everyone operating a motor boat must pass the safety course, pass the exam and have a valid NY Boating Safety Certificate;
the requirement that a motor boat towing a skier/tuber/wakeboarder must have both a driver and a spotter who is over the age of 10;
the etiquette of keeping watersport activity at the west end of the lake;
no wake zone close to shore;
watch out for swimmers – who are encouraged to swim using a bright orange swim buoy to increase their visibility;
We are a community. We know our neighbors’ names – and their dogs too. We wave from our cars. We socialize. We borrow and lend stuff. Good neighbors are considerate:
We drive slowly on local roads (20mph speed limit posted);
We pick up after our dogs and deposit the little baggies in our own trash bins;
We empty our septic systems at least every five years; and remind gardeners not to blow leaves into the lake;
We keep noise down as we know how it travels across water;
I am looking forward to a safe and fun summer on the water. Please feel free to reach out to any board member with feedback or questions and my contact info is below if anyone would like to pass along a comment or suggestion or just say hello.
Sincerely,
Alan Sternfeld
